Cities are ecosystems where the social, built, and natural environments coexist. They are spaces of great global importance, as they house more than 50% of the population and offer the greatest opportunities for economic development. However, their downside is the significant challenges they present due to the risks and vulnerabilities to which they are exposed in terms of social inequality and the effects of climate change, which particularly affect the most vulnerable populations.

With a focus on the Global South, this book reviews the context of cities, their impacts, challenges, and opportunities. It also presents success stories based on the field-based implementation of existing tools and suggests a path forward to achieve systemic change in the organization and planning of urban environments and build sustainable cities.
