For the inaugural grant scheme, BASE selected eight locally-led initiatives to receive a one-year grant of USD 40,000 to implement solutions focused on tropical forest management in the Global South (Brazil, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Ghana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon and two in Indonesia). Grantees provided information to infer the climate rationale of their proposal. For each project, a local researcher or team of researchers was selected. During the implementation stage, the researchers, a team coordinating their work, along with BASE and the grantees examined together how the proposed interventions contributed to mitigation and/or adaptation. As a result, they come up with a refined version of the climate rationale.

The BASE initiative’s first call for grants marked a significant step in a bigger process aimed at promoting alternative approaches to narrate climate evidence of locally-led solutions that are simpler, quicker, and more meaningful for the involved communities. This initial phase, though just the beginning, yielded valuable lessons that are worth sharing with other stakeholders interested in funding solutions that improve daily life for local communities while also addressing the climate crisis.

We take great pride in the strong network we have built throughout this process. The generous support of the Skoll Foundation was instrumental in turning this vision into reality. Their trust, flexibility, and continuous support from the inception of BASE were crucial to our success. Similarly, all partners and aligned initiatives who took a “leap of faith” by supporting BASE before its official launch at COP27 played a vital role. Many like-minded organizations provided insights and support to discuss and showcase the learnings from this endeavor. Furthermore, the grantees and researchers demonstrated immense commitment to a learning-by-doing approach, remaining open-minded and patient throughout the process. This flexibility fostered creativity, while the dedication of everyone involved enabled concrete actions towards building resilience. This strengthened our conviction in our goal.

This document summarizes the process and results of the first call of grants and highlights the main lessons learned that will lead to advocacy efforts towards making climate finance more accessible to local communities.
